General FAQs

Health care providers can deliver more thorough treatments by using genetic testing to understand how your body reacts to medication. This testing is called PHARMACOGENETICS, or PGx. The test identifies how your genes will affect your body’s response to different medications to help determine the best types and dosages for you.

Your genes can account for up to 95% of how your body responds to medication. For example, your body may process a drug slower or faster than the average person, which can affect your risk of side effects.

We will test your genes with a simple, non-invasive oral swab test (saliva or cheek cells). Our lab then tests the sample and sends the results to your healthcare provider to review with you.

DNA samples are typically destroyed within two weeks of processing. Your result will only be shared with the ordering provider of the test. Your genetic information is protected through federal laws including HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and GINA (Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act) that ensure your personal health information is not shared without your consent.

PGx testing:

  • Gives your healthcare provider insight into which medications may work best for you
  • May reduce your risk of harmful drug experiences
  • Helps your doctor prescribe the correct dosage for you
  • Potentially reduces your recovery time after procedures or diagnoses
  • Saves money by reducing doctor visits and unsuccessful medications

How does PGx testing work?

We will test your genes with a simple, non-invasive oral saliva test. Our lab then tests the sample and sends the results to your healthcare provider to review with you.

The analysis is performed from a non-invasive oral swab sample obtained easily with a collection kit. From this sample, our laboratory will purify the patient’s DNA.

Collection kits are mailed directly to the patient’s home or can be taken at the doctor’s office.

Analysis of DNA results will be ready within 7 to 14 business days, upon arrival to the laboratory. Your results will be sent to your provider for review and interpretation. Please discuss any questions about your results with your provider.

Genetic testing is used by healthcare professionals who can legally prescribe medication according to their discretion and help patients understand and interpret the results. Talk to your provider today to find out if genetic testing is right for you.

Precision Genetic works directly with your insurance carrier for testing coverage. Of course, coverage may vary depending on different plans. Depending on your carrier, patients may have to cover a portion of the test through a deductible or copay. Self-pay option for the test is available upon request.
